Abstract

Purpose of the Study – To carry out a comparative investigation and analysis of the working conditions of unorganised construction workers in the rural and urban areas of the Kumaun Himalaya region, with a specific focus on the Nainital district.

Design/methodology/approach – The study is based on a descriptive research design which has used quantitative study approaches. Further, we used a multi-stage sampling technique and the sample size is determined through William Cochran’s methods for infinite population size. The study used a cross-sectional study approach to collect data from both parts of the study area and the field visit was conducted between June 2023 to December 2023. Furthermore, the interview schedule was used to collect data from the respondents.

Conclusion – The study confirmed significant differences in working conditions between rural and urban areas, with urban workers experiencing longer working days, less leisure time, and higher wages. However, daily work hours were found to be similar across both settings.
