Abstract

Urban air pollution remains a critical public health concern, disproportionately affecting occupational groups with high exposure. Auto rickshaw drivers in Chennai face prolonged contact with vehicular emissions, yet their perceptions and health outcomes remain understudied. This study investigates drivers’ awareness of air pollution, perceived health risks, and self-reported symptoms using a structured questionnaire and semi-structured interviews administered to 151 participants across key city zones. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic content analysis. Results reveal widespread recognition of visible pollution and immediate respiratory discomfort, but limited understanding of chronic health effects. Commonly reported issues included cough, eye irritation, and fatigue, closely linked to daily driving duration and traffic intensity. The findings highlight the urgent need for occupational health interventions, targeted awareness campaigns, and urban policy measures to mitigate exposure. By foregrounding the experiences of high-risk workers, this study contributes to evidence-based strategies for improving urban air quality and safeguarding occupational health.
